Arlan Norman, Dean
Arlan is the founding dean of the College of Sciences and Technology. Before coming to Western in September 2003, he was the Associate Dean for Natural Sciences, Chair, and a member of the Chemistry department at the University of Colorado , Boulder . At Colorado , he lead the department in developing innovative ways to teach general chemistry through use of relevant lecture demonstrations and 3-dimensional visualization techniques. He is an inorganic chemist whose research involved studies of phosphorus compounds. Dean Norman has edited and written extensively in his field and has served as a consultant for numerous publishers, private companies and scientific institutes. Dean Norman and his wife Diane are very active outdoors and are finding our Northwest lifestyle suits them quite nicely!

Kathleen Kitto, Associate Dean
Kathleen is the Associate Dean for the College of Sciences and Technology and a professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, where she also served as chair. Her areas of specialty include materials engineering, engineering products for the differently-abled, finite element analysis and the engineering science aspect of materials selected for resonance in musical instruments. Kathy and her husband Dennis are great fans of live theater and can often be found enjoying the offerings of our local venues.

Sue Hoidal, Assistant to the Dean
Sue came to Western after a number of years in administration for the Bellingham School District’s Special Education Program. She now oversees the college budgets, space needs, limited term faculty needs and all of the processes and procedures that keep the college humming along. If you have questions about procedures surrounding tenure and promotion, faculty or staff evaluations, vacancy pools, travel, annual fee proposals, summer session, or any number of other items, you will most likely be referred to her. Sue and her husband Steve have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren and enjoy spending their time on outdoor activities of all kinds.

Breta Brown, Administrative Assistant
Breta is most likely the first friendly voice you will hear when you call the Dean's office and the first face you will see when you visit us. Among her many duties, she manages all of the Dean's appointments and keeps the rest of us moving in the right direction at the right time. Breta and her husband, John, are antique car buffs and grandparents extraordinaire!

Jennifer Mott, Program Coordinator
Jennifer is our Program Coordinator and may be the second friendly voice you hear when you call us! Among other things, Jennifer is our webmaster, graphics designer, and liaison for the Western Foundation office, which makes her key in our development and outreach efforts. Jennifer is a self-professed computer geek who loves the outdoors and is a proud mom of three school-aged children.
