Benefits of Student Membership

Students can be nominated as an Associate or Full member depending on their research experience. Associate members are nominated based upon their future research potential, while full members are nominated based upon their proven research achievement. Nomination is done by any active full member, such as the WWU Chapter officers. Contact an officer if you are interested in being nominated.

Annual students dues are $25.00. There are funds available to help with this fee for young and international scientists with limited incomes through the main Sigma Xi Chapter.

Benefits of Membership include:

    • Sigma Xi student members are eligible for certain restricted funds in the Grants-In-Aid of Research program.
    • Sigma Xi brings together scientists and engineers from many scientific disciplines and helps to foster interdisciplinary interactions.
    • Membership is a great resume builder.
    • Sigma Xi members are eligible for discounts on subscriptions to Nature and Annual Reviews as well as a 10 percent discount on all Sigma Xi publications and merchandise.
    • Sigma Xi members receive a subscription to American Scientist, the bi-monthly magazine of Sigma Xi.

Becoming a Member

Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination. Those who have shown potential as researchers are invited to join as associate members. Full membership is conferred upon those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievements in research. Each year the Society initiates more than 5,000 new members. Over the course of the Society's distinguished history , nearly 200 members have won the Nobel Prize and many more have earned election to the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering.

Sigma Xi has more than 10,000 members who are students. These individuals can be nominated as either associate or full members depending on their scientific research accomplishments.

To become a member of Sigma-Xi affiliated through Western Washington University

Fill in the application form and mail it or e-mail it to the President or President Elect.

The Chapter officers will act as nominators; however, any active (dues paying) full member may nominate an individual for membership.

Once your application has been approved, you will be asked to write a check payable to the chapter for the yearly dues.

Graduation Cords Available

We are pleased to offer Sigma Xi graduation cords that chapter officers can order. The cords are white and blue and cost $9.50 including shipping. A picture of a cord and the order form are available at http://www.hand-hammer.com/sxpage.htm. Cords can also be ordered for Sigma Xi faculty members to wear with academic regalia.
