The Bellingham Dance for the Camera Festival 2005 will be held March 24-25, 2005 at 7:30 and March 26 at 2:00 in Bellingham, Washington. The festival is sponsored by Western Washington University Dance Program. This year, we are searching for Nationwide and International Submissions.

This Festival will coincide with the Northwest Region American College Dance Festival and will be included in the festival’s events calendar. There will be three public showings of the juried selections. Admission for ACDF participants is free.

The jury will be composed of artists and arts presenters from the areas of dance, choreography and film. Please use the following links to learn more about Gaelen Hanson, Tamara McDonald and Jeff Curtis.


Two Cash Awards will be offered for festival winners.

Best in Show – Awarded by the Jury

People’s Choice – Awarded by the Audience

Awards will be announced at the closing gala performance of ACDF. Artists do not need to be present to win.


Deadlines:

Deadline for Early Submissions: December 10, 2004

Deadline for Late Submissions: January 30, 2005


Rules and Regulations:

  • Works must be dances made specifically for the camera or documentaries dealing with dance.
  • Works should have been completed after January 2002.
  • For preview please send a VHS copy of work. If selected VHS, SVHS, DVD or mini DV will be accepted for final viewing.

Bellingham Dance for the Camera Jury Members

Gaelen Hanson
Gaelen Hanson received a B.A. from Oberlin College in 1990 with a double major in Dance and Theater. In 1992, Gaelen completed her Advanced Diploma in Dance/Performance at the European Dance Development Center in Arnhem , The Netherlands. Before co-founding 33 Fainting Spells with Dayna Hanson in 1994, Gaelen performed nationally and internationally as a dancer in the companies of Mary Overlie, Stephanie Skura, and Randy Warshaw, and performed her own solo work at new performance venues in The Netherlands, Germany , New York and Seattle .

For the past 10 years Gaelen has been co-artistic director of Seattle-based dance theater company 33 Fainting Spells. 33 Fainting Spells’ critically acclaimed work has been commissioned and presented in contemporary performance venues both nationally and abroad including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop and The Joyce Theater in New York, and Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt, Germany.

In addition to creating new works in dance theater, Gaelen Hanson co-curates and produces New Dance Cinema, Seattle ’s only film festival devoted to the presentation of significant and innovative work in the international arena of dance film and video. Co-sponsored by Northwest Film Forum, the fourth edition of New Dance Cinema will take place in May 2005.

With Dayna Hanson, Gaelen Hanson has co-directed two short 16mm dance films, Measure & Entry, which together have screened at over 50 film festivals and venues internationally, including the New York Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and CinemaTexas in Austin . Measure is included on First Run Features’ Dance for Camera DVD, and was nominated for a 2002 American Choreography Award by The Academy of Dance on Film in Los Angeles . 33 Fainting Spells’ second short film, Entry, premiered at the 2003 Seattle International Film Festival where it received the award for “Best Experimental Short Film.” Entry was also included in the 2004 Best of the Northwest Film Festival touring program.

In addition to performing in a ten-city national tour of 33 Fainting Spells current live dance theater work, Our Little Sunbeam, Gaelen Hanson is currently in pre-production for a new short 35mm dance film entitled Your Lights Are Out Or Burning Badly.

Tamara McDonald
Tamara McDonald has been working professionally in the performing arts since 1997. For the last six years she has been producing concerts and events in the fields of music, dance and theatre as Western Washington University’s College of Fine and Performing Arts – Performing Arts Center Series Coordinator. She has presented and worked with professional dance companies ranging from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Montreal Danse, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, David Dorfman, RDT Dance as well as the Buglisi-Foreman Dance Company (principal dancers of Martha Graham). With a life long passion for dance and film, during her time as Coordinator, she enjoyed photographing for Western’s Dance Program. Based in Bellingham,WA, she currently works as a freelance tour and production manager for global artists from around the world and continues to pursue her interest in photography while also managing the Whatcom Film Association’s Pickford Dream Space, a local downtown venue/cinema that is very excited to act as a host to the 2005 ACDF Dance for Camera Festival!

Jeff Curtis
Jeff Curtis’ background includes both professional dance performance and work on multiple projects utilizing dance and technology. He has danced with Shapiro and Smith in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America and helped in the creation of dance works including Alvin Ailey's "Fathers and Sons." Jeff is also a founding member of Gail Gilbert Dance Ensemble and has worked with Lisa Giobbi Movement Theatre, David Gordon/Pick-Up Performance, and MEGATRON. In the realm of dance for the camera and dance technology, he has collaborated on numerous projects with various choreographers. Included in these projects are:  

* The creation of video projections for dance pieces by Aiko Kinoshita and Chalie Livingston  

* Direction and mixed real-time video projection of a 2-camera live feed for "Stutter/Time" choreographed by KT Niehoff, Sarah Gamblin and John Dixon for the 21st annual Northwest New Works at OnTheBoards in Seattle  

* Served as resident videographer for Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation  

* Edited "Ladyboy" by Carolyn Pavlik, premiering at the 2004 Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival.

Currently, Curtis is focusing on video documentation of dance concerts, creating quality documents for modern, ballet, jazz, improvisational scores and classical Indian dance.
