Message from
WWU President
Karen W.
Morse
Why does WWU continually expend
energy on diversity*?
Diversity is central to Western's
Mission and
Strategic Planning Goals, and is
considered to be an integral component of a
quality education. Our goals recognize the
changing composition of society as a whole,
and its impact on the world for which students
are educated.

Diversity at Western encompasses much more
than monitoring numbers. In addition to
recruitment of a diverse student body, faculty
and staff, the University constantly strives
to enhance support services for students,
improve its policy environment, increase the
quality and amount of programming available on
campus, and broaden the curriculum to reflect
the diversity of the world today. I have a
citizen/alumni
board that advises me on these matters,
and I welcome your advice as a member of the
Western community on strategies to better
promote an environment that supports the
shared values of civility, community,
diversity, and equity for the diverse
collection of individuals that comprise the
Western community.

Responsibility for participating in the
university's efforts and for creating a
community that promotes a safe and supportive
learning environment for the diverse
individuals who make up Western -- falls
squarely on each of its members. We welcome
and encourage your contributions to our
community. This web site provides links to
resources, organizations and university
contacts that can help you find a way to be
involved.

*The University defines diversity as
encompassing a wide variety of
characteristics, including but not limited to:
age, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religious
and ethical beliefs, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic background, and disabilities.
