disAbility Resources for Students
Western Washington University

Procedure 5: Requesting Sign Language, Oral, and Tactile Interpreter Services
(Effective August 27, 2001).

After disAbility Resources for Students (DRS) completes a Needs Assessment for the student and determines that the student is qualified for interpreter services, the student must initiate the interpreter services process.

1. Action by Student:
  • Completes an Interpreter Request Form and includes on the form the location, date, start and end times of the event where the interpreter is needed, as well as the names of three preferred interpreters from the current interpreter pool.
  • Delivers the form to DRS at least five business days before the services are needed.
2. Action by DRS:
  • Contacts the preferred interpreters to see if available for the event.
  • Notifies the student only if there are no interpreters available for the event.
3. Action by Student: Provides DRS with twenty-four hours notice if unable to attend the event.

Important Note:
The interpreter pool is made up of qualified interpreters employed at WWU and contracted interpreter referral services. A new pool is generated at the beginning of each academic year and made available to the students for review.
