- 20 credits in writing courses, to be taken
from the following:
English 500: Directed Independent Study
English 502: Seminar in the Writing of Fiction (repeatable)
English 504: Seminar in the Writing of Poetry (repeatable)
English 505: Seminar in the Writing of Nonfiction (repeatable)
Students interested in playwriting may sign up for Directed
Independent Study.
- English 690: Thesis Writing (5 credits)
- 15 credits in literature, composition and
rhetoric, or theory
English 513 (Teaching Composition) for Graduate
Teaching Assistants
Note: A student may, with permission, take up
to 10 credits in 400-level courses.
Additional requirements:
- Reading knowledge of a foreign language or
an additional 5 credits of graduate work in literature, composition
and rhetoric, or theory.
- An examination designed by a faculty committee
on selected works appropriate to a student's emphasis.
Applicants interested in the Creative Writing
track should send a representative selection of
their writing at the same time they apply for
admission to Western: 10-15 pages of poetry or
10-15 pages of prose.
