English Studies Concentration

Course Requirements:
45 credits for the thesis option, or 48 credits for the non-thesis option

  • English 501: Literary Theories and Practices (5 credits)
  • 25 credits in literature, composition and rhetoric, theory

English 513 (Teaching Composition) for Graduate Teaching Assistants

  • English 690: Thesis Writing (5 credits)

Thesis credits count as elective credits. If a student elects not to write a thesis, 3 additional credits are required as electives.

  • Electives: 10 credits in literature, composition and rhetoric, English language, creative writing, pedagogy.

18 credits for the non-thesis option.

Note: A student may, with permission, take up to 10 credits in 400-level courses.

Additional requirements:

1. Reading knowledge of a foreign language.

2. An examination designed by a faculty committee on selected literary and theoretical texts.

Applicants interested in the English Studies track should send a writing sample at the same time they apply for admission to W.W.U.: 7-12 pages of written work in literary study.
