What's best about Honors?

The best thing about Honors definitely has to be the sense of community. Coming from a small high school where my senior class was only 54 people, it was a huge change to belong to a community of over 10,000. Living on the Honors floor in the dorms and attending classes with those same people helped me to establish a familiar base of people among many new faces.
Also, the smaller class sizes are a huge plus. They allow students and professor to interact on a much more personal level and in a more laid back atmosphere. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that your professors genuinely want you to succeed and grow in their class and are there to help you to accomplish just that.

Your first Western "WOW" moment?

Convocation, hands down. ALL freshman need to attend!

Outside the classroom?

I spend a lot of free time downtown reading, drinking coffee, and sitting by the water. I am originally from New Mexico where large bodies of water don’t really exist, so having water so close and accessible is a real privilege for me. I recently learned how to sail last spring through a class here at Western, which was by far one of the best things that I have done in my time here. I also learned how to kayak and rode a jet ski for the first time in my life not to long ago.
I also work in the Edens/Higginson dorms at the desk. Although I do not live in the dorms this year, it is nice to still have that connection to campus and feel like part of the larger community.

What is the best book you've read lately?

Lately it’s, So Far From God, by Ana Castillo. I read it for my Latin American Literature class and was expecting not to like it. I was totally shocked when I realized it was so similar to one of my favorite books for all times, One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Marquez. Plus So Far From God is also set where I grew up which made it all the better!

What is your favorite memory of WWU?

My favorite memory of WWU is finally finding a subject/major that I am so excited about. Honestly, when I came in as a freshman I had no clue what I wanted to study. Last year was really the first year when I found my love for Anthropology and it makes all the difference in the world to take classes on a subject that you are really excited about. Plus, the professors that I have met that are so passionate about what they believe and teach, it is hard to not have their excitement rub off on you.
