What's best about Honors?
The best things about Honors is probably the small class size. The small class size allows you to engage in a more intimate discussion of the class material, which means that not only do you learn more in depth but you also have the opportunity get to know your peers and professor much better than you would in a larger class. The seminars are especially excellent, I think, since they have at most 15 students and are discussion-based, which I particularly enjoy.
Your first Western "WOW" moment?
Let's see......I think my first WOW moment happened while I was doing homework in the 3rd floor lounge of Higginson during fall quarter of my freshmen year. I was taking a momentary respite by staring out the window, and for some reason was reminded of when I was 10 or so and would imagine what it would be like to be in college. I remember thinking, "Wow, here I am actually in college at Western; this is what college is like, and it's pretty damn amazing." Kind of a humbling and inspirational life-reflection moment, you know? A bit dorky, to be sure, but that is one of the most prominent memories I have from freshmen year.
Outside the classroom?
Outside the classroom, I love to be social. I love just hanging out with my friends, doing whatever. I try to watch at least one movie or episode of a TV show at the end of the day, as a way of unwinding from all my class reading. I also play board and card games when I get the chance, and enjoy going on random adventures around Bellingham.
What is the best book you've read lately?
The Reader. I saw and loved the movie, and my grandma recommended the book to me. I bought a copy at Henderson's, and had it read a day or two later. It is a phenomenal book, if only because it magnificently delves into some interesting philosophical and moral dilemmas, which I don't think the movie captured completely.
What is your favorite memory of WWU?
There are so many great memories of WWU! One of the best is probably the first time it snowed during my freshmen year. A large group of friends and I went sledding down the slope in front of Old Main on pieces of cardboard donated by the dining hall, after which we walked through the Arboretum. Once we were too wet and cold, we returned to the dorms and had a Lost marathon.
