Through Conditional Admission, international students may be accepted for University Undergraduate Admission while still working to satisfy WWU's language proficiency requirement for full admission. Students accepted for Conditional Admission must have a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (paper-based) / 173 (computer-based) / 61 (internet-based) and must have a "B" or better grade average in secondary or college-level work. Admission to Western is selective, so meeting minimum criteria is no guarantee for admission.
Conditional Admission students attend the Intensive English Program full-time for at least one quarter and enroll in the IEP Academic English classes, which consist of Writing, Reading, Oral Communications, and Academic Preparation. These classes are designed to introduce students to the American university classroom and to help them develop the English language and academic skills needed to succeed in credit courses.
After successfully completing Academic Preparation and scoring at least 520 (paper-based) /190 (computer-based) /68 (internet-based) on the TOEFL, students begin to enroll in university credit classes, in addition to taking a lighter load of Academic English classes. The Conditional Admission student will be fully-admitted to the university upon successfully completing Academic English and satisfying WWU's TOEFL requirement of 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 80 (internet-based).
Students may apply for Conditional Admission by enrolling first in the Intensive English Program, or they may apply directly to the Office of Admissions. For more information contact the IEP Director.
