ScholarshipsThe Department of Journalism offers several scholarships for declared journalism pre-majors and majors. At this time, the department does not have scholarships available for incoming freshmen and transfer students; however, the Scholarship Center has a complete listing of university scholarships.
The Gerson F. Miller Journalism ScholarshipThe Gerson F. Miller Journalism Scholarship honors Professor Gerson Miller (1926-1989), who taught journalism at Western starting in 1967. Applicants must be in active enrollment status, declared Journalism pre-majors or majors, and have at least nine credits completed in Journalism at Western. Selection for the scholarship is based on academic achievement, evidence of ability to contribute to the advancement of the field of communications and financial need. Scholarships up to $1,500 are awarded each year.
Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association (PNNA) ScholarshipThe Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association (PNNA) scholarship is an endowed scholarship program established with a grant from the PNNA. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a declared journalism major on the basis of academic achievement, evidence of the ability to contribute to the advancement of the field of communications and financial need.
Journalism Alumni ScholarshipThis scholarship is funded by the continuing support of alumni of the Department of Journalism. Two awards of up to $750 each will be awarded to declared journalism majors with at least nine completed journalism credits at Western. Selection for the scholarship is based on academic achievement, evidence of the ability to contribute to the advancement of the field of communications and financial need.
Steven Rupp Memorial ScholarshipThe Steven Rupp Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of Steven Rupp, a journalism major 1980-84, to honor his memory and his dedicataion to the field of journalism. Applicants must be declared journalism pre-majors/majors and have at least nine completed journalism credits at Western. Selection for the scholarship is based on academic achievement, evidence of the ability to contribute to the advancement of the field of communication and financial need. Students interseted in a career in sports journalism are encouraged to apply. Scholarships up to $1,500 will be awarded each year.
Department Tuition and Fee WaiverThe Department of Journalism awards annually a tuition and fee waiver(s) totaling $1,000. Applicants must be full-time, declared journalism pre-majors or majors enrolled on Western's main campus.
Other private/industry journalism-related scholarshipsThroughout the year we receive scholarship notices from private and industry-related organizations. These notices are posted in the department and sent to all journalism majors/pre-majors via e-mail. It is the responsibility of the student to pick up any information or applications in the Journalism office (Communications Facility 251) and submit the information directly to the organization.
Apply for Journalism scholarshipsIn April, the department announces the scholarships, and students can pick up scholarship packets and applications in the Journalism office. Deadline for submitting an application is early in May. Faculty review the applications and choose the scholarship recipients, and the scholarships are awarded at the journalism faculty/staff/student picnic (usually the weekend between dead week and finals week). All declared journalism pre-majors and majors are encouraged to apply.
