Title: Galois Theory and Solvability by Radicals
Speaker: Lael Hebert.
Abstract: The quadratic formula is a well-known equation for finding the
roots of any quadratic polynomials. Similar formulas exist for cubic
and quartic polynomials, but not for the quintic. This talk will use
Galois theory to address the problem of the insolvability of the general
quintic polynomial. We will discuss the relationship between subfields
of a splitting field and subgroups of the Galois group. A basic
background in groups and fields is helpful.
