Title: Estimating Statistical Variability in Insurance Losses and Loss
Reserves
Speaker: David Kennerud, FCAS, MAAA. Actuary with the Seattle office of Milliman, Inc. Manager for the property-casualty consulting practice
Abstract : Insurance losses are subject to significant variability from
year to year. Numerous methods are available to the practicing actuary
to determine the estimated expected value of losses, but statistical
techniques are generally required to estimate the statistical
variability (often called process variance) in insurance losses. This
talk will discuss some of the statistical methods actuaries typically
use to estimate this variability, as well as some of the pitfalls and
other problems that can arise.
