POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
POSITION / SALARY
Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in Elementary Mathematics Education to begin Fall 2010. The position is at the Assistant Professor level, but may be offered at the Associate Professor level to a suitable highly qualified and experienced applicant. This position may be offered on a limited term basis if no tenure-track candidate is selected.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree (or ABD) in an appropriate field by September 2010.
- Evidence of excellent teaching.
- Evidence of active scholarship.
- On-going professional activity.
- Commitment to the preparation of pre-service and in-service teachers at the preK-8 level.
- Candidates with post-doctoral academic experience must show evidence of continued scholarly productivity.
Preferred: Teaching experience with students at both the preK-8 and pre-service levels.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates are expected to be excellent teachers committed to undergraduate instruction and curriculum development in preK-8 Mathematics Education (both content and methods). Teaching assignments may include some core mathematics courses, depending on the candidate's interests. The standard teaching load for faculty is currently two courses per quarter. Scholarly and programmatic collaboration with colleagues, development of a strong publication record, leadership, and the establishment of grant-funded projects are expected.
ENVIRONMENT
Western Washington University has about 600 faculty and 12,500 students. It is located in Bellingham, a city of approximately 70,000 on the hills beside Bellingham Bay between Seattle and Vancouver. Proximity to these cities, the ocean and mountains provides access to many recreational opportunities as well as metropolitan facilities and major research institutions. The Department of Mathematics has about 30 full-time faculty whose interests extend over a wide range of topics in applied and pure mathematics and math education. The department has a strong commitment to the preparation of excellent teachers at all levels, with four faculty positions associated with the program in Mathematics Education. Unlike most teacher education programs, all of the content and pedagogy courses specific to mathematics are offered as an integrated sequence within the Mathematics Department.
