Math Vision Statement

To provide the premier undergraduate experience in mathematics amongst institutions in the Northwest, by offering a broad and challenging program with outstanding instruction and opportunities for close interaction between students, instructors and highly qualified faculty with strong and active programs of scholarship and professional involvement.

Math Mission Statement

The goal of the instructional program in Mathematics is to provide high quality education in mathematics meeting the instructional and professional needs of students at both the undergraduate and masters levels. Our instructional program incorporates the standard core topics as well as coverage of more specialized areas in both pure and applied mathematics, and also programs in math education, numerical computation and statistics.

At the undergraduate level the department has a three-fold mission: preparation of majors, service to other departments and programs, and general education. We aim to prepare our majors both for mathematically related careers in education, government, business and / or industry, and for continued advanced studies in mathematics. Our service mission is to provide coherent, effective and efficient courses for students in other majors or programs. Our general education mission is to prepare students to effectively use quantitative and symbolic reasoning and analysis in their personal and professional lives. The graduate program aims to prepare students for a variety of career options, including more advanced academic studies and immediate professional employment.

The Department of Mathematics also aims to contribute to the mathematical profession through productive scholarship and active participation in the affairs of the relevant professional organizations.

The instructional needs of students will be reflected in appropriate curricular structures and instructional and assessment methods, with courses taught by highly qualified instructors committed to excellence in the teaching of mathematics. The intellectual and professional needs of students will determine the structure, content and objectives of our courses and programs, which reflect relevant goals identified by the faculty, professional organizations, potential employers and the academic units served.

The Department of Mathematics will seek to attract and retain faculty of the highest caliber, with commitments to excellence and outstanding records of continued success in instruction, scholarship and professional service in appropriate fields. Math faculty will remain current with, and incorporate in classes, appropriate mathematical, curricular and pedagogical developments, and provide excellent role models for our students and peers.
