Each veteran enrolling at Western for the first time on the G.I. bill must either apply for education benefits with the Veterans Administration or transfer his/her authorization from the last college attended. To ensure that allowances are received on time, this should be done well in advance of the academic quarter the student wishes to attend. Assistance in completing the application is available at the Veteran's Service Office located in the Registrar's Office, Old Main 230.
Veterans should also make certain that the academic objective they plan to pursue is one authorized by the Veterans Administration. For instance, if the authorization is for a Master's degree, the veteran must enroll in courses acceptable toward that degree. Any necessary changes in objective should be made in advance of registration.
A veteran enrolling for at least a half-time credit load may request advance payment. This request must be received by the Veterans Administration at least 30 days before the beginning of the quarter.
New transfer students may qualify for advance payment if there has been one calendar month since last attendance.
For more information regarding veteran benefits please email Veterans.Affairs@wwu.edu or visit the GI Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov.
Any person who has been called to extended military duty and is required to withdraw from the university will be given special consideration as follows:
- Withdrawal during the first third of the quarter: no credit; full refund of tuition and fees.
- Withdrawal during the second third of the quarter: receive S/U grade; one-half refund. The department concerned will determine applicability of such credit. (If arrangements for half credit with S/U grades cannot be made, student may request withdrawal and full refund.)
- Withdrawal during the last third of the quarter: receive full credit and letter grade; courses specified. Student must arrange with instructors on submission of final grades.
- A student required to withdraw during his or her final quarter before obtaining the baccalaureate degree may be granted the degree if approved by the dean of his or her college, major department, or if in teacher education, the College of Education.
- Veteran students who re-enter the university no later than one year after discharge will be guaranteed a place at Western.
- No re-entry fees will be charged to re-entering veterans who return to Western no later than one year after discharge.
Students who are called to active duty should notify the Registrar's Office immediately upon receiving orders so that assistance can be provided in making all necessary arrangements for withdrawal and full tuition refund, or in the case of late-term call-up, awarding of grades and credit.
