The Access Program
Based on the student’s academic abilities and potential to benefit from the services, Student Outreach Services, in coordination with the Office of Admissions, invites students to participate in the Access Program.
Access is a year-long program designed to help first-year students make a successful transition from high school to college. Research shows that students who are academically and socially engaged in their college environment graduate at higher rates than those who are less involved. The Access Program helps to ensure that these students remain engaged and involved during their first year, better enabling them to be successful for the remainder of their college career.
"The Access Program helped me make Western my home - not only
did it guide me through academic counseling, it also showed me how
to take advantage of everything my new home has to offer."
- Tuan Trinh (Freshman, 2007-2008)

Access Program Highlights
Access promotes social and academic engagement through:
- FIG (Freshmen Interest Groups) clusters
- student/peer support in a shared learning experience
- personal CAMP Peer Mentor assistance
- year-long academic support
Access Academic Support Coordinator (ASC)
In addition, program participants receive academic guidance and assistance from the Access Academic Support Coordinator (ASC). The Access ASC works with each Access student individually to:
- select classes appropriate for each quarter
- navigate the financial aid world
- develop long-term educational plans
Priority Registration
Finally, as an added incentive to participate in the Access Program, Access students enjoy Priority Registration (PR). What’s PR? With PR, students register for classes before everyone else. How would you like to register for classes before 13,000 other students?
