After a short stint in Wichita, Kansas (my birth), my parents and I moved to Ferndale, Washington when I was just a year old. Having grown up in Whatcom County, I consider myself to be a native of the area and I try to stay as active as possible in the community. After graduating from Ferndale High School, I quickly relocated to Bellingham where I have been (mostly) a permanent resident ever since.
I started working at Western Washington University in 2003 as an ESL instructor and later as the Student Services Coordinator for the Intensive English Program. In 2007, I joined the Student Outreach Services team as an Academic Support Coordinator and as the new website designer. I am a graduate of Western where I received both my Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies and my Master’s Degree in Education, as well as my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification.
I am an avid bird-watcher, hence the old nickname "Finch", and with my wife Sachiko, I love scouring the countryside hoping to find that next bird that I can "check-off" of my list. I also have a great love of music and have been playing a "mean" bass guitar for the last 25 years. Hopelessly inseperable from my wife, Sachiko and I also like hiking & camping, scuba diving, watching the Seattle Mariners (go M's!), and traveling; most frequently hopping back and forth between the U.S. and her home country of Japan.
If you're ever passing by Old Main 110, please stop in and say hi! As a "tea connoisseur", I am always looking for a good excuse to chat with people and take a "tea break"!
