WWU Theatre Arts Department
Welcome from the Department Chair
Welcome to our 2009-2010 Theatre Season at Western Washington University. As we soldier on in the ever-changing and challenging world of academia, we are extremely proud to offer a season themed “The Smallest Footprint, The Biggest Impact.” As one of the greenest campuses in the country, Western is a perfect place to mount a theatre season focusing on how we as artists create, perform and respond to the world around us with a consistent eye towards reducing, reusing and recycling just about everything! Theatre has always been one of the better models for creative recycling of all manner of things: that wishing well in front of the Keller home might have been a brick fireplace two seasons ago… the gown Sylvia escapes from Verona in may just have started out as a magician’s cape… and the shabby, cracked and dusty barware in The Iceman Cometh most likely has been seen on our stage every season since the inception of the theatre department…
As we continue to grow as a department - even in the face of economic turmoil - we are proud to offer a season that not only honors classics and celebrates new work, but also demonstrates our commitment to educating the artists of the future to be ecologically and fiscally resourceful as well as creative,
knowledgeable, driven and successful! As a department we continue to excel in the national and international spotlight, with our students and faculty creating award-winning presentations, publications and performances (check out our “brag box” located on our Department Page).
We look forward to sharing our “Smallest Footprint/Biggest Impact” season with you!

Mission of the Theatre Arts Department
The faculty and staff of the Western Washington University Theatre Arts Department are committed to a liberal arts approach to theatre education while maintaining a balance of both academic and practical approaches to the art of theatre. We deeply believe in the value of academic rigor which in turn supports and maintains productions of the highest standards. We promote a global, diverse and collaborative view of theatre education, and strive to train artistic leaders in their chosen theatrical disciplines who will further contribute to the craft.
