Abbreviations

Use symbols and graphics:
PDF version of symbols and graphics
 
Use only the first syllable or part of the word:

pol       politics

intro   introduction concl   conclusion
psych   psychology dem   democracy phil      philosophy


Omit vowels from the middle of words:
bkgrd   background estmt   estimate envrmnt   environment

Subject specific terminology:
Write the term or phrase out in your notes the first time and then use initials or your own set abbreviation whenever it is used again.

For example:
First Time In Notes: Rapid Eye Movement
Subsequently: REM

Use apostrophes when leaving out letters in the middle of words:
gov’t   government cont’d   continued


Use "g" to represent ing endings:
explrg   exploring chkg   checking


Other standard abbreviations:
e.g.   for example i.e.   that is (in other words) NYC   New York City
