TASC
Services

Mission Statement
The Mission of
the Tutorial & Academic Skills Center is to provide academic support
to Western Washington University undergraduates to help them achieve
their highest academic potential. The core of our services
focuses on providing academic assistance through individual tutoring
for GUR courses, and through other structured programs that provide
opportunities for students to develop or enhance the academic
skills, intellectual capabilities, and scholarly attributes that are
embodied in a liberal arts education and necessary to be successful
independent learners.

Study Area
The Tutorial & Academic Skills Center is open Monday through Friday,
8 a.m. - 5 p.m. as a study area. During these times anyone may come
in to study, use the computers, or check out materials.

Drop-in
During drop-in you can get your questions answered while you study.
We offer a variety of daytime and evening
drop-in hours where no appointment is needed. A list of the
drop-in hours for each subject
we tutor is available online as well as in the Tutorial & Academic
Skills Center. You are welcome to bring in your lunch while you
study!
Appointments
Students may make 50 minute appointments with peer tutors for many
GUR level mathematics, science, economics, and philosophy courses.
Appointments may also be made to prepare for the Math Placement Test
(MPT). When preparing for a MPT appointment, please come with
questions on specific problems or types of problems. Books are
available for checkout at the Tutorial & Academic Skills Center to
aid in studying for the test, and practice problems are available
through the Math Placement Test web site. During the academic
year, appointments are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 4
p.m. To find out more about which classes are tutored, the times
tutors are available for specific courses, or to make an
appointment, call us at 650-3855 or visit us in Old Main 387.
Study Skills
Students may make an individual appointment with one of our study
skills tutors to cover a variety of concerns. Areas of study skills
covered are: general study skills, note taking, test taking, reading
for meaning, time management, and math/science study skills. For
more information on study skills, visit our
Study Skills page.
We are also available to do study skills presentations for residence
halls or other campus groups. Please contact us well in advance to
arrange a presentation.
Workshops and Presentations
At the beginning of each quarter the Tutorial & Academic Skills
Center presents calculator workshops for the TI-82, TI-83, and
TI-85. Some quarters we have workshops on how to do well in math
courses or other study skills areas.

Materials
The Tutorial & Academic Skills Center provides solutions to exams,
quizzes, and handouts for many of the courses we tutor. These
materials may be checked out for use in the TASC, and some may even
be photocopied. We have copies of many of the current textbooks,
with solutions manuals for some. We also have a library of math and
science text and resource books which can be checked out for two
week periods. These can be helpful tools if you are studying for the
Math Placement Test, GRE, or similar tests. Other materials
available in the TASC include calculators, computers with Graph-Link
capabilities, and many useful handouts.
