Clery Act Incident Report Procedures
Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act

Preamble. The federal Clery Act requires WWU to collect and annually publish statistics concerning the occurrence of selected crimes (on university property and nearby public property) reported or known to local police or any campus security authority. Campus security authorities are defined as the campus police department and any other employee with “significant responsibility for student and campus activities.”

Failure to make complete and accurate reports renders Western liable to a fine of up to $25,000 for each violation.

The US Department of Education, which administers the Clery Act, has ruled that the term campus security authority includes, at a minimum, any official who oversees campus housing, student centers, extra-curricular activities, or athletics (incl. team coaches).

Procedures. If you are one of Western’s campus security authorities and you receive a report, or otherwise become aware, of the occurrence of one of the selected crimes, please do the following:

1. Encourage the crime victim(s) and/or witness(es) to report the incident to University Police.
2. If the occurrence indicates the possibility of an imminent community threat, inform University Police without delay.
3. If the occurrence reported is a sexual assault or other violent crime:
   • Inform the victim(s) and/or witness(es) of the support services provided by Western’s Crime and Sexual Assault Services (650-3700), and
   • Actively support the victim(s) and/or witness(es) in accessing these services.
4. Complete an online Clery Act Incident Report form.
