Reporting Crimes
|
The University encourages victims and witnesses to promptly and accurately report all crimes to the University Police Department or other appropriate police agencies. Police can be contacted at any time by dialing X3911 on campus or 911 off campus. In the case of sexual assault or other violent crime, whether on campus or off, initial contact may be made with Western's Crime and Sexual Assault Services (CASAS) 24-hour help line at 650-3700. In addition to providing a variety of other support services, CASAS staff can assist victims with making a report to the appropriate police agency.
Emergency "blue light" call boxes for contacting University Police are located throughout the campus along pathways and in parking lots (see map), and there is an exterior courtesy phone with emergency call button at the main entrance of each residence hall. For more information about contacting police, see the University Police Department's home page. For information about reporting crimes at Western's off-campus sites or contacting security authorities at those sites, click here. Voluntary, confidential reports of crimes for inclusion in Western's annual crime statistics may be made by victims or witnesses to University Police; to CASAS; to the University Judicial Officer in the Office of Student Life (650-3706); to resident directors or resident advisers in University Residences; and/or University personnel. It is University policy to maintain confidentiality on such reports unless it is determined that an emergent community safety issue is involved. Professional and pastoral counselors are not required to report crimes disclosed to them when acting in their professional roles, and incidents so disclosed to them may not be included in Western's published crime statistics. However, when appropriate, counselors inform students they are counseling of the option to report crimes on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the annual crime statistics. |
