The Diversity Achievement Award
Western has never before enjoyed such a diverse student body. In 1990, just 755 students of color, or less than 8 percent, attended WWU. In Fall 2009, that number had more than tripled to 2,272 students of color, or nearly 18.7% of the student body. That's not just due to changing demographics: It is the result of thoughtful and committed outreach to prospective students, as well as a welcoming campus community that fosters increased retention. It takes efforts throughout the university to make this happen.
Each year, the President presents the Diversity Achievement Award which recognizes one faculty, staff, or student (or office) who has significantly contributed in the area of diversity. The award, which is presented at the Fall Convocation, includes a stipend to use for research, teaching, equipment and supplies, or professional enhancement.
