Panelist Biographies
Maja Chaffe, J.D.
General Counsel
Maja Chaffe joined the Allen Institute in June 2007 with broad legal experience across several industries. She is responsible for the Allen Institute's legal, regulatory and governance affairs. Previously, Maja was vice president and associate general counsel at Expedia, Inc. Maja was also an associate in the corporate and securities practice group at Preston Gates & Ellis (now K&L Gates) and spent ten years in the legal department at Todd Shipyards Corporation. An active community volunteer, Maja has been involved with numerous local area non-profit organizations in various capacities including board member, volunteer, group leader and pro-bono attorney. She holds a J.D. from Seattle University School of Law and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Washington.
Elaine Jones
Chief Operating Officer
Elaine Jones joined the Allen Institute for Brain Science in 2005 as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Jones’ accomplishments include experience in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Her expertise extends to restructuring operations, establishing financial strategies and improving the effectiveness of corporate marketing. She has focused on start-up and turnaround situations, as well as the integration of acquisitions. Previously Jones worked at The Picower Institute for Medical Research, a 501(c)(3) in New York, where she served as COO. She has also worked for PHH, a Fortune 500 service organization, as V.P. of Marketing and then as S.V.P. of Operations. Jones has had assignments in the medical field at Beckman Instruments, Nichols Institute and Genzyme with responsibilities encompassing training, product development and strategic planning. Jones graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a B.S. in Medical Technology.
Carol L. Thompson, Ph.D.
Program Manager
Carol Thompson joined the Allen Institute in 2004, where her initial work led to the creation of a public database on sleep deprivation, and the discovery of novel subdomains of hippocampus. Dr. Thompson currently oversees the Allen Developing Mouse Brain Atlas, a free resource characterizing gene expression from embryo through old age. She has publications spanning the fields of sleep and circadian rhythms, molecular neuroanatomy and DNA repair. Current research interests include understanding how gene expression varies in the brain over the lifespan. Dr. Thompson holds a B.S. in Biology from University of Richmond and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of North Carolina. She has been a board member for the Seattle Chapter of Association for Women in Science (AWIS) since 2005, and was recently elected Chapter Representative for the Pacific Cascade Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.
