Network

Purpose
The purpose of the Network is to coordinate efforts to support and assist students in crisis, including students engaged in harmful or disruptive behaviors, as well as community members affected by these students. The Network meets weekly to review reports, share appropriate information, develop support strategies and coordinate resources.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review information about concerning student behavior from faculty, staff, students and other Western community members;
  • Assess risk of student behavior and make appropriate referrals;
  • Develop action plans to address student behavior and its impact on the community;
  • Identify systemic issues that warrant further work and make appropriate referral(s);
  • Abide by professional obligations and privacy rules regarding information that may or may not be shared by individual Network members with others (including other Network members).

 

Scope of the Network
Thresholds for review include one or more of the following:

  • Erratic behavior that may be disruptive to the mission and/or normal proceedings of the Western community;
  • Potentially threatening behavior (to self or others);
  • Direct statement(s) or behavior that indicate aggression or great distress;
  • Deterioration of academic work, ranging from rapid deterioration over a short time, or slower deterioration over a longer time, particularly when coupled with other concern(s);
  • Behavior that cannot be supported by any one Network-member office/resource;
  • Consultations from Network members regarding appropriate support/assistance for individual situations.

 

Network members
The Network consists of key staff from Residence Life, Student Health Center, Counseling Center, Prevention/Wellness Services, University Police, University Communications, Registrars, disAbility Services for Students and is convened by staff from the Dean of Students office.

Possible interventions/responses
The Network makes case-by-case decisions and may engage in one or more of the following: monitor the situation/student’s behavior; outreach to the student(s) involved; voluntary referral(s) to appropriate resource(s); coordinate action plan with other resources; notification of family member or other support person. The Network may also convene a smaller sub-group comprised of fewer members or may refer a situation to another group (such as the Threat Assessment Team or Suicide Prevention Team).
