2014 Tentative Itinerary


Fall Quarter 2013
Participate in several group meetings and activities to connect and bond with other program participants and receive training and preparation for the trip. Dates TBA.

Winter Quarter (Note: Dates are approximate and will be finalized when airline tickets are purchased)

January 7-16

  • Pre-trip preparation
  • Students will participate in a variety of activities, assignments and reflection to prepare for service, learning and living in Kenya

January 18-19

  • Travel from Seattle to Kochia

January 19-February 20

  • Participate in service and learning projects at Ombogo Girls’ Academy and local community agencies in Kochia
  • Complete written and group assignments and reflection activities
  • Possible day trips depending on student interest to local markets, Homa Bay, nearby hiking spots, Lake Victoria and more
  • Attend seminars with faculty and local experts addressing local issues related to health, history, politics, culture and language:
    - Min Otieno
    - Abba Integrated School of Excellence
    - Rural health clinic
    - History, science, swahili and other classes at Ombogo

February 20
Travel to Gashora, Rwanda

February 20-March 7

  • Participate in service and learning projects related to Gashora's community wellness goals:
    - Education/TESOL
    - Econmomic Development/Entrepreneurship
    - Sports and Leadership
    - Nutrition/Food Security
    - Environmental Stewardship
    - Infrastructure Development/Capacity Building
    - More ...

March 7-8
Return to Bellingham via Kigali

March 12-14
Final reflection classes, action project, final paper
