Youth Programs at Western

Summerwinds - Grades 6-12

Presented by Western’s College of Fine and Performing Arts, Summerwinds is a chamber music day camp for young woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon) players who have had at least two years of experience on their instruments.  All students will benefit from coaching in a small group learning environment that focuses on the joy of playing chamber music and learning lifelong skills.

Students will be immersed in the joys of playing chamber music to help develop musical skills, discipline, leadership, self-confidence, creativity and a sense of community.  During the course of Summerwinds, students will participate in small chamber groups, large ensemble playing, and individual master classes.  All activities will take place in the Performing Arts Center on Western’s campus in a small group learning environment with WWU Department of Music faculty and additional professional musicians and coaching.

Students should bring their instruments/reeds, a lunch and snack daily.  Double reed players should bring any reed making equipment that they have.

$390 for full tuition

Register by April 1 to receive the early bird rate of $359.  Participants can also register at the buddy rate of $349 each when registering with a friend new to the program.

WWU Alumni, Faculty and Staff are eligible for a $21 discount at time of registration.  Discounts cannot be combined.

Summerwinds participants can elect to live on Western’s campus during the course of the program.  The optional costs for on-campus housing and dining includes:

  • $300 for five nights in a double occupancy room for one parent and one child in Western’s university residence halls.  Check-in date of June 23; check-out on June 28.
  • $325 for cafeteria meals for the week, including five breakfasts, six lunches and five dinners.  Your first meal will be lunch on June 23 and your last meal will be lunch on June 28. 

All classes are self-sustaining and subject to minimum enrollments.

A full refund is granted if a program is cancelled. No reduction in fees is given for late arrival, early departure or expulsion for disciplinary matters. Cancellation requests must be submitted via email to 12 working days prior to the first day of your session; a $50 handling charge will be deducted.

  2. Submit the Student Application, a letter of reference, and an audio/video sample (details included on the application) by May 25, 2014.  Late submissions will be considered on a space available basis.
