How to File a Complaint

There are two methods for filing a complaint: informally and formally. Each concern will be handled in as confidential a manner as possible.

Informal Resolution

The Informal Resolution process occurs when you discuss your concern with the party or parties involved and/or with the appropriate supervisor or department chair. You may use the EOO to assist early in the process. If you do not achieve a satisfactory resolution, you may request help from the EOO in seeking a resolution. If the EOO has jurisdiction over your complaint, an attempt at an informal resolution will be concluded within 15 working days.

Formal Complaint

If you are not satisfied with the results of the informal resolution process, you may file a Formal Complaint. This process begins when you submit a complaint form to the EOO that includes a written statement of the alleged act or acts of illegal discrimination. The EOO will determine if it has jurisdiction within 10 working days.  If the EOO has jurisdiction then an investigation will be conducted. The respondent will be sent a copy of your complaint and given the opportunity to submit a written response. You or the respondent may request that a designated investigative assistant help with the investigation.

The investigation and a written report of findings will be completed in 45 working days unless there is an extension. A Vice President will review the report and determine appropriate actions within 10 working days. The Vice President’s action will be documented and provided to appropriate parties.

Retaliation

Retaliation for filing or participating in the complaint process, regardless of the outcome, is prohibited. If you believe you have been retaliated against you may file a separate complaint with the EOO.
