ACADEMIC COORDINATING COMMISSION MINUTES

Regular Meeting  -- February 2, 2010

 

Chair James Hearne called the meeting of the 2010 Academic Coordinating Commission to order at 4:01 pm on Tuesday, February 2, 2010.   There were twenty (20) people present including Commissioners and guests (see attached roster).

Approval of ACC minutesMembers approved ACC minutes of January 19, 2010 as written.

Election of Vice Chair:   Yvonne Durham moved that Roger Anderson be elected Vice Chair, seconded by Tracy Thorndike-Christ, which motion passed unanimouslyRoger Anderson will serve as Vice Chair until the end of Spring quarter.  The understanding is the role of vice chair is a step to serving as Chair.

Report from VPUE:   Steve VanderStaay described a draft proposal that will offer a limited number of summer awards for Western faculty who wish to create blended materials or other online tools to enhance class instruction and which might be made available department-wide.

Not Accepted:  AHI 275 in these minutes.  ACC aware that revised language has been approved by CUE and will come forward.

 

 

Not Accepted:  Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major Art

Commissioners ask the department to recount the credits for consistency.  Commissioners also asked if the change in credits reflected an increase in the major.

 

396 Summer Art/Art History Program in Japan.  This is accepted but department asked to work out the meaning of the deletion: “combined art/art history course”.  Is this two separate courses with same descriptions?

ACCEPTED.  Remove parenthesis in Major: Humanities History of Culture from “LBRL 121 or HNRS 103”.  These are not necessarily equivalent courses -- they may be equivalent in Liberal Studies but not in History or in Honors.

 

--LBRL340.  Add LBRL332 and ENG101 to list of Prereqs. In LBRL340.

FYI:  Minors do not need direct HEC Board approval.  The Associate Dean sends a list of these at the end of the summer.

 

JAPN 330 and 331.  Changes affecting the major will come forward next year.

ACCEPTED.

A new description was approved for Latin203(4), a course approved by ACC on January 19th.  The language follows:

“Prereq:  Latin 202 or equivalent.  To be taken in sequence as the third in an intermediate language sequence.  Review of fundamentals; selected readings from Roman writers with an emphasis on honing grammatical skills and understanding Roman literacy and cultural achievements.”

ENG201 will be revisited due to prerequisite requirement (it is accepted).
