ACADEMIC COORDINATING COMMISSION MINUTES

Regular Meeting --  October 5, 2010

Chair Roger Anderson called the first meeting of the 2010 Academic Coordinating Commission to order at 4:04 pm on Tuesday, October 5, 2010.  There were  twenty-one (21) people present including Commissioners and guests (see attached roster).

Approval of Minutes:  Commissioners approved the minutes of May 25, 2010 as written.

Reports:

Chair Roger Anderson  described ACC’s process for vetting curriculum minutes, and reviewed actions from 2009-2010.  Council members are strongly urged to review the E-Catalog online prior to next meeting, and the recorder will send the URL.

Vice Provost Steven VanderStaay familiarized ACC members with the report for the accreditation visit of 10/20 and 10/21/2010, and Western’s accomplishments  in meeting accreditors’ recommendations in four major areas: 1)  Budget processes (this was accomplished through the creation of the University Planning and Resources Council, and the initiation of new capital budget processes); 2) that Western close the Assessment feedback loop.  Western created the Committee on Undergraduate Education combining the old GUR committees and Assessment committees and now systematically documents how we use assessment data to improve programs.  Western named the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education as Western’s Accreditation Liaison officer and Director of Academic Assessment.  Each department and college has also named a designated assessment coordinator. 3)  Library Strategic Plan.  This has been created, informed by assessment, to support the University’s academic mission. 4)  Structure of committees.  This has been accomplished through restructuring the President’s Cabinet, improved joint governance and facilitated faculty participation in strategic planning and resource decisions, as well as through the creation of the committees mentioned above in item one.  The entire “Focused Interim Report” is available at http://www.wwu.edu/provost/planning/accreditation.shtml

Appointments:  Randall Burtz, PEHR, was elected to the Graduate Council replacing Ethan Remmel Fall Qtr

Comment re Graduate Council:   ACC and the Chair acknowledges many options for procedural review of graduate programs, and asks if external review occurs (e.g., outside faculty from a similar program at another college).  Western does great work but frequently fails to sufficiently document the process and outcome.  ACC asks “what existing criteria are part of our graduate review process”?
