Motion to Create an Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Committee

A motion to create an ad hoc strategic planning committee with membership consisting of:

  • five faculty members (5);
  • one classified staff member (1);
  • one exempt staff member (1);
  • two students (2);
  • two members of the executive administration (2);
  • one community member and/or WWU alumnus (1);
  • and one representative of the Board of Trustees (1)

(forwarded by Trula Nicholas and seconded) passed unanimously with an amendment (forwarded by Seán Murphy and seconded) to add Brent Carbajal, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and UPRC Chair John Bower to the committee as advisory members.

Membership Selection Process for Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Committee

A motion to request nominations from the following bodies:

  • United Faculty of Western Washington (one faculty member);
  • Faculty Senate (four faculty members);
  • Public School Employees of Western Washington University (classified staff member);
  • Professional Staff Organization (exempt staff member);
  • Associate Students (student members) University Administration (executive administration members);
  • Western Foundation in consultation with Alumni Association (community member/alumnus)
  • Board of Trustees (Board of Trustees representative)

with nominations to be confirmed by the University Planning and Resources Council (forwarded by Seán Murphy and seconded) passed with one member voting in opposition to UPRC confirmation of committee membership.

Election of Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Committee Chair

Councilors discussed whether the ad hoc committee should have one or more chairs and whether chair(s) should be appointed by UPRC or elected by and from the membership of the ad hoc committee.

A motion to designate one administrative co-chair, to be selected by and from the senior administrators on the committee, and one faculty co-chair, to be selected by and from the faculty members on the committee (forwarded by Jeff Newcomer and seconded) passed unanimously.

Considerations for Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Committee Selection Process

UPRC members discussed a list of considerations that shared governance bodies can consult when selecting representatives to the ad hoc committee.

A motion to email the list of considerations to UPRC members for feedback and discuss at UPRC’s meeting of November 2nd (forwarded by Peter Diehl and seconded) passed unanimously.
