WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

MINUTES OF MEETING OF May 26, 2010

The Academic Technology Committee was called to order on May 26, 2010 at 4:02 PM.

Approval of the Minutes:

The minutes of May 12, 2010 were approved with three amendments.

Agenda Items:

Constituent concerns:

Michael Seilo had a concern regarding the security issues of information retained on multifunction devices, such as printer-copier-scanner devices.  Frank Roberts reported that there is no evidence that any confidential data have been compromised by this means and the associated risk is very small, but it is under investigation.

Discussion:

Kacey Morrow brought up an email she got from a student regarding system privileges of students on iMacs. Students are not allowed to change settings such as mouse sensitivity and as a result avoid using the machines.  Frank Roberts responded that ATUS has personnel who can assist and advise on the administration of Apple computers.

Deepinder Bajwa discussed wireless capabilities in regards to the needs of students. He suggested surveying students in order to meet their needs. Bob Thomas brought up the roll out of 4G wireless networks and the impact it will have on our infrastructure

Mike Seilo asked for clarification on classroom response systems, known as ‘clickers’. Frank Roberts explained that the clicker system is ready and installed in every level four classroom, and that ATUS has a large supply of clickers for check-out by individual students or instructors

Conclusion

David Bover concluded the meeting by asking committee members to consider what issues the committee should be addressing next year.  Members offered ideas such as continuing to keep track of the security audit, follow-up on the lab replacement cycle, consider technologies other than computers that may be useful to faculty teaching in classrooms.

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 4:38 PM.
