WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

MINUTES OF MEETING OF October 6, 2010

Vice Chair Gary Bornzin called the Academic Technology Committee to order on October 6, 2010 at 4:22 PM.  There were ten people present (See attached roster).

Approval of the Minutes The minutes of May 25, 2010 were approved with one amendment.

Appointment of ATC Chair:  Bornzin called for nominations for 2010-11 Chair.  Geoffrey Matthews was nominated and elected unanimously by acclamation.  Bornzin will continue to serve as Vice Chair.

Agenda Items:

Reports/Announcements:

      Budget Cuts

John Lawson reported on the planned budget cuts that occurred over the summer. Faculty were concerned about cuts in Scientific and Technical Services because of equipment that is important to serving students in the university and the impact to research projects.  The cuts will stand, but there is a committee in the process of formation that will look at how to maintain the core services and support levels while still moving forward. He will request advice from the ATC for areas to focus on in future reductions that may occur.

      Network Switches

Beginning next year and through the summer of 2011 there will be a refreshing of network switches throughout campus.  Modifications to most data closets and data rooms have been completed. This will enable better feeds and speeds and allow Western to look more at Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and provide quality of service in that area.

VOIP Alternate Software Options

Cisco and Microsoft were selected for trial implementations due to low cost. Cisco was loaned to Western at no charge, and Microsoft will require the purchase of one piece of hardware.  Most of the conversion cost comes from instruments.  One alternative is the possibility of converting to soft phones; picking up a handset or using the microphone on the computer.  Cisco and Microsoft will be   tested to see how they integrate with Outlook.

Discussion:

Lawson opened a discussion about alternative open source software for our learning management software (LMS); Sakai and Moodle are being considered. Faculty would like to see quizzes functioning in the current version of blackboard.

Frank Roberts added that cost to any change in our LMS would not only include faculty training, but also conversion.  It could take two to four hours per course and could also require an extra support person.

Max Knittel noted that the conversion of the Physics/Astronomy email system to the university’s Exchange email system using Outlook was successful. Having the increased attachment size made the adoption workable.

Constituent Concerns:

John Mclaughlin had concerns about the migration from Titan servers to the servers being used now.  Committee members plan to discuss this at the next meeting.

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 5:03 PM.
