ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate October 16, 2006

Ira Hyman, 2006-07 Faculty Senate President, called the Fall Quarter meeting to order at 4:03 pm. Senators accepted the Senate minutes of October 2, 2006, and Standing committee minutes.

Hyman reminded Senators that they and constituents are invited to hear Lois Haignere report on the Faculty Race and Gender Salary Equity Study on Friday, October 27th at 3 pm in OM340.  A copy of the report is available in the Senate office.

President Morse presented the University Bargaining Team that will negotiate with the Faculty Union.  Morse reported on her trip to Washington D.C. with Dean Salzman and on fund raising efforts there.

Provost Bodman reported on current enrollment figures suggesting that revised GUR requirements had a hand in our ability to graduate 200 more students this year.

Hyman welcomed the Interim Chief Steward of the faculty union as a regular part of the agenda.  Bill Lyne invited faculty to respond to the UFWW survey and participate in open discussions regarding bargaining goals.

Senators conducted an extensive discussion on whether to create a Center for International Studies and hire a Director.  The current directors of the programs involved were present and included Don Alper, James Loucky, Kathleen Tomlonovic, Ed Vajda, Chris Wise, and Cecile Hanania.  The Senate recommends that the Provost continue meeting with these directors to create a more fleshed-out proposal for the Senate.  In their comments, senators supported the concept of a Center for International Studies, but expressed a need for more information regarding reporting lines and budgetary information.

         Senators adjourned at 5:55 p.m.
