Items from the Faculty Senate President: |
Approval of Senate Minutes: Senators accepted the Senate minutes of April 18, 2011 as written.
Senate President Pearce reported:
1) that a faculty volunteer is sought as speaker for welcoming Convocation;
2) that a potential MOU would change the UEP name to ”Unit Evaluation Plan and Operating Procedures” to expand the authority of the document to include faculty governance.
Items from the Administration
President Shepard:
· Continued uncertainty on budget decisions from Olympia has caused the campus to move ahead on ideas to reinvest in the university and sustain excellence in the long run. UPRC will weigh in on immediate decisions; other decisions will be postponed to Fall when there is less pressure. The UPRC has scheduled several days of hearings on what the planning units are considering.[1].
· Regarding the Eliminations and Mergers document proposed by the Senate, Shepard reported that this year’s budgeting process and the roles of faculty in the confidential process could be formalized once a critical examination of the completed process can take place. Faculty agreed that a full disclosure of controversial issues is necessary before voting on future policies.
Provost Riordan
· Provost Riordan reported that the Graduate Strategic Advisory Committee criteria for evaluating graduate programs will be released soon so faculty can gather statistics over the summer.
· Riordan reported that CST and Woodring dean and EESP Director searches are moving along well.
· Riordan reported that future decisions on rebasing are efforts to reinvest in the university and to shore up quality and protect the people who made their careers here going forward. Current students will be served in any scheduling decisions going forward.
Other Reports
· Steven Garfinkle, UFWW President, reported that he is the sole nominee for UFWW president for the next two-year term. Garfinkle added that the UFWW provides an important forum for cross-campus dialogue.
· Ramon Rinonos-Diaz, ASVP-Academics, introduced Fabiola Arvizu, elected ASVP-Academics 2011-12. Rinonos-Diaz announced that AS will hold runoff elections for 3 other positions.
College Faculty Governance Reports from Senators
· Senators who formed ad hoc committees to survey satisfaction with faculty governance in their colleges reported on their efforts.
· Pearce held several straw votes in which Senators voted 1) to continue with the survey process; 2) to work out an introduction and one or two questions that can be available to those who would like a sample survey.
