Check out the Mt. Baker Theatre, Whatcom Museum of History and Art, and the Pickford Cinema for a peek into the local arts scene. Just don't forget to check out the Bellingham Farmers Market for locally grown food and handcrafted goods. The town of Fairhaven is also a great place to visit, just take the Boulevard trail to get there by foot or bike. The Bellingham area holds over 400 restaurants--you can visit a few of them just by walking down Railroad Avenue.
There are 3 ski resorts close by, but the most popular by far is the Mt. Baker ski area (Average Annual Snowfall: 647 inches -- but it holds the World Record Snowfall in 1998-99 at 1,140 inches).
If skiing and snowboarding isn't your thing, try sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, mountaineering, climbing -- there are seemingly endless possibilities here. The WWU Outdoor Center leads trips for all levels of experience, rents equipment, and holds instructional clinics.
