General Requirements

Application Fee:

Fee varies by program type and location. Please see individual program listings for application fee information.

A non-refundable application fee is required for each application submitted. This includes: initial application, request to defer, changing to another admission term, or transferring to another WWU graduate program.

Transcripts/Baccalaureate Degree:

Applicants must have already completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a foreign university before the term in which they intend to begin their WWU graduate program.
The degree must be appropriate to the master’s study intended.
One official transcript from each institution attended (including study abroad credit) must accompany the application.

English Language Proficiency:

All Applicants must obtain at least the minimum TOEFL scores (227 computer-based test (CBT), 567 paper-based test, 86 internet-based test) for admission eligibility unless:
> English is your native language; or
> You have earned, or are in the process of earning, a baccalaureate (or higher) degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution; or
> You earned your degree at an institution where English was the language of instruction.

Grade Point Average:

In order to be eligible for full admission, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA (on 4.0 scale) over the last 60 semester-hours or 90 quarter-hours of study. Post baccalaureate coursework must be “upper-division” at a four-year university to be included in GPA calculation.
Applicants with advanced degrees from accredited institutions are considered to have met GPA requirements.

Letters of Reference:

Three (3) current letters of reference are required for all but MBA applications.

Letters may be submitted by anyone in a position to make an assessment of the applicant’s academic or professional competence, and can be submitted in person, via mail or emailed directly by the referee to Graduate.SchoolAdmissionApplication@wwu.edu

Statement of Purpose

Many programs require a statement of purpose as part of the graduate application. Please see Statement of Purpose Guidelines for program-specific requirements concerning length and content.

Test Scores:

Test scores are required for most graduate programs. Some programs do not require admission test scores for holders of advanced degrees. For more detailed information on testing requirements, see Testing Information.

The Graduate School accepts only official GRE test scores sent directly from ETS. Official scores are reportable for five years.

NOTE: GRE scores are now reported electronically directly from ETS and loaded into Western’s student information system. Since we do not receive and maintain paper score reports, you may need to request the scores again if you requested your scores prior to December 2007.

WWU's ETS institution code is 4947.

Additional Requirements:

Many programs have additional application requirements (resume, writing sample, etc.). Please see specific program listing for details. If additional program-specific materials are required with the application, they must be received before the application will be eligible for review by department faculty.
