Information

WWU uses the term graduate assistant (GA) to include teaching assistant (TA) and research assistant (RA). Most GA's provide instructional assistance as TA's. RA's are generally employed by department faculty funded with external research grants.

Currently, the Graduate School funds about 150 graduate teaching assistantships (TAs) annually from the University's instructional budget. The information sheet and application above are for students applying for the graduate teaching assistantship (TA).

Graduate teaching assistantships are available in limited number in most graduate programs. TAs must meet or exceed all criteria for maintaining graduate status and make satisfactory progress toward the degree. Graduate students are limited to no more than the equivalent of six full-time quarters of service as graduate teaching assistants.

These assistantships are competitive. Duties vary according to the department and program, the needs of the program faculty and the student's graduate plan of study.

Current graduate students and new applicants interested in a graduate assistant position funded through the Graduate School must apply through the Graduate School. A nominee must have full admit status to the Graduate School (not provisional status) and, if a current student, be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.

Full-time appointments require 20 hours of service per week; half-time appointments require 10 hours of service per week.

Students receiving a full-time appointment may not accept other on-campus employment during the time they are in pay status as graduate assistants.

Students receiving a half-time appointment may accept other on-campus employment up to 9 hours per week during the time they are in pay status as graduate assistants.

Graduate teaching assistants funded by the Graduate School receive a stipend and a partial tuition waiver for eligible enrollment.

Current TA stipend and waiver information is available here.

Not all positions referred to as "Graduate Assistant" or "Teaching Assistant" provide the same stipend, tuition waiver and insurance benefits. If you have questions or need clarification regardind the position or benefits, please contact the academic department.

If you are awarded an assistantship, you will receive a letter from the Graduate School. To access required employment documents, see http://www.wwu.edu/gradschool/funding/graduate_assistantships_empforms.shtml .
