About the Center
The Center for Healthy Living was formed in 2002 to bring together a group of faculty and staff who were independently interested and working on health and wellness issues in the community and on the campus of Western Washington University. The goal of the activities of the CHL is to advance programs, activities and individual efforts that improve or sustain components of healthy daily living. Programs sponsored by the CHL will seek to:
- Apply principles of behavioral health science to facilitate community health
- Contribute to community through student and faculty applied research and service learning projects
- Engage the community in activities that promote healthy lifestyles
- Assess consumer access to quality health care and illness prevention throughout the community
Areas of focus within the CHL will include:
- Successful/Healthy Aging
- Healthy Families
- Active Lives/Physical Activity and Nutrition
- Children's Health
- Working Life
- Emotional Components of Health and Health Behavior
- Safer Communities
- Health Literacy
- Health Policy
- Healthy Environments
The educational activities of the CHL will focus on:
- Professional preparation for Allied Health and other Medical Professions
- Majors/minors and specializations
- Certificate programs
- Community development and outreach
- Inservice
- Community workshops
