History for Elementary Education
Elementary Education is a teacher certification program within the Woodring College of Education. All elementary education students must complete an academic major in addition to the professional education coursework.

The History Department offers a major specifically for those students who will also complete the elementary education teacher certification program through Woodring College. It is History for Elementary Education. This major does not result in an endorsement in History. Students should follow the guidelines for the major as listed in the WWU Bulletin. Major courses with grades less than a C will not be accepted. To successfully fulfill this major, the overall major gpa must be 2.5 or higher. The elementary history major consists of 45 credits --15 of which must be upper division (300 or 400 level) -- including the following required courses. With careful planning some of these courses may also meet GURs.
Two courses in United States history:
HIST 103 - American History to 1865
HIST 104 - American History Since 1865
Two courses in European history
Two courses from one of the following areas: East and South Asia; or Africa and
Middle East; or Western Hemisphere outside the United States.

Electives under advisement of the History Department
Another approved elementary education academic major that includes some history courses is Social Studies. It also is specifically for those students who will complete the elementary education teacher certification program through Woodring College. Students should follow the guidelines for the major as listed in the WWU Bulletin. This major does not result in an endorsement in Social Studies, and consists of 55-62 credits. With appropriate planning many of these courses could also meet GURs. Advisement for the Social Studies major is through Elementary Education in Miller Hall 262.
