Dr. George Mariz, Director of the Honors Program, has been administering and teaching about the intellectual and cultural history of Europe at Western since 1970. He holds B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He has published widely on intellectual and cultural history. He is currently working on topics in the history of religion and cultural history in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe. Outside the classroom his hobbies include bicycling, theatre, music, and architecture. He and his wife also love to travel, especially to France and Italy, and being with their three (soon to be four) grandchildren.
Dr. Tom Moore, Program Advisor received his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago, where he studied in both the Department of English and the Divinity School, eventually writing a dissertation on the religious and philosophical grounds of William Carlos Williams’ Paterson. At Western he has taught in English and Liberal Studies in addition to Honors. He has published poems in journals such as Nimrod, St. Petersburg Review, and Tiferet as well as articles on literature and hermeneutics (“Dispatch from the Hermeneutic Jungle”). He lives in Bellingham with his wife Catherine (Ph. D. in Psychology).
Carla Pederson has been working as an office assistant in the Honors Program for 27 years, and enjoys talking with prospective and current Honors students. She has been married to Brian for 37 years and they have two sons. They enjoy spending time in their home in Arizona, going on skiing trips and spending time with family and friends.
