Special Open Enrollment - Death of a Dependent

If you experience the loss of a dependent (such as a spouse, Qualified Domestic Partner, or child) we recommend that you contact Benefits at 360-650-7314 to make an appointment with someone in Human Resources who will help you file the necessary forms, review your current WWU benefits, and answer your questions.


If you are the subscriber and are currently enrolled with medical and dental coverage

Options

YOU MUST:

  • Remove the decedent's name from your plan so that:
    • You will not be billed for claims paid by the health plan for services after the date of death.
    • You will not be responsible for premiums paid by the employee/employer for the dependent's health plan enrollment after the date of death.

YOU MAY:

  • Change your medical and/or dental plan coverage.

YOU MUST:

  • Enroll in medical coverage if you do not have other group medical coverage.

Coverage Begins

  • Coverage or Plan Change: Begins the first day of the month following the dependent's loss of eligibility due to death.
  • Decedent: Enrollment ends the last day of the month in which the death occurred.
