What happens to my benefits? (including Dependent Care/GET contributions/Flex Spending Account)

When your employment ends at Western, you will no longer be eligible for PEBB employer-provided benefits. You have the option of continuing your medical/dental insurance through the COBRA extension of benefits. Here is some important information and rules to remember:

  • PEBB medical, dental, and life insurance will end at midnight on the last day of the month in which employment ends
  • Basic long-term disability insurance ends at midnight on the date employment ends. Optional coverage ends at midnight on the last day of the month in which employment ends or the last day in which you have paid the premium.
  • If you are eligible to retire, you may choose to elect PEBB-sponsored retiree coverage (please refer to WAC 182-12-171 for the definition of retirement)

What happens to my retirement?

This depends upon the type of retirement plan you in which you are enrolled. Please contact the benefits department at 650-7314, or 650-6106 and view our Benefits Information page.

What happens to my accrued unused paid time off (vacation, administrative leave, and personal holidays) once I have received my layoff notice?

An employee is entitled to 100% compensation for any unused earned vacation time that remains at the time of layoff. In order not to lose unused personal holiday time, you must use this leave time during the notice period.

Will I be paid for my unused sick time?

No, you will not be compensated for any unused sick time.

What happens to my tuition waiver?

In order to be eligible for the tuition waiver benefit, you must be a half-time or more regular salaried faculty or staff in active status as of the first day of class. If the effective date of your layoff is after the first day of class, you will be eligible for tuition exemption for that quarter only.

Will the University help me find a job?

Human Resources will provide information and services to assist laid off employees in re-employment services.
