The Supervisor Training And Resource Program is the place Western’s employees turn to for professional development. To build a solid foundation for employees, we have begun by offering training based in compliance with laws, contracts, and policies. These classes make up the foundation of HR’s Transformational Pyramid of Empowerment. 


STAR: Communication & Successful Conflict Resolution

Instructor: Nick Sanchez

Do you know what your triggers are? Do you know what effective feedback sounds like? Do you know how to decipher an emotional message appropriately by reframing? These are some of the tools of communication supervisors will learn about in Communication and Successful Conflict Resolution. This course is a must for being able to make those conversations easier.

STAR: Employee Engagement

Did you know Western is a GREAT place to work? Through the GREAT Model ) Growth, Respect, Expectations, Appreciation and Trust), Supervisors will learn how to create a culture of trust and empowerment that will allow employees to achieve their potential. By learning and applying Steven M.R. Covey’s 13 Behaviors of trust, Supervisors will learn to create the foundation of a fully engaged workforce.

STAR: From Leave Request to Paycheck: Getting it Right

Instructor: Sarah Crawford and Nick Sanchez

Paying our Human Resource and providing Leave are fundamentals of our jobs, but it can be difficult at times to get it right. From Leave Request to Paycheck is a class that takes the guesswork out by giving supervisors all the answers to the tough questions about pay and leave. In this class supervisors will learn about university policies concerning leave and pay including areas that have traditionally caused confusion like Cyclic Leave, Alternate Work Schedules, Overtime and Hours over Appointment.

STAR: Labor Relations 101

Instructor: Doug Adelstein

Labor Relations 101 will provide supervisors with the information needed to work hand-in-hand with their employees who are covered by bargaining units. Knowing the applicable section of Bargaining Unit Contracts WFSE and PSE will allow supervisors to do so.

STAR: Leading is Caring: Managing FMLA/Accommodations

Instructor: Nick Sanchez

Caring for Our Human Resource is a course design to help a supervisor navigate the Accommodation, FMLA and Shared Leave Processes by familiarizing supervisors with the laws and university policies that pertain to each. After being given overviews of each of these processes, supervisors will also learn our best practices including the do’s and don’ts concerning caring for an employee who has been out on FMLA Leave.

STAR: Seamless Hires

Seamless Hires is designed to give each supervisor all the tools needed to navigate the university hiring procedure and to land the ideal candidate for the needs of the employment unit. By becoming familiar with the applicable laws and university policies as well as learning about our best practices for preparing for a search, reviewing application, and interviewing, supervisors will be ready for a successful search.

STAR: Supervising a Diverse Workforce

Instructor: Nick Sanchez

Managing diversity is valuing the differences that make us greater than the sum of our parts. This class will allow supervisors to hold a facilitated conversation about those differences, identify privilege that comes with that, and to explore where social stereotypes come from. This will help supervisors to create an environment in which difference and diversity are actively sought, passionately considered, and fully protected, respected and embraced. This class will feature a panel of diverse employees who will share their experiences with these issues in the workplace.

STAR: Upholding Ethics in the Workplace

Instructor: Chyerl Wolfe-Lee

Upholding Ethics in the Workplace is a course designed from the Ethics in Public Service Act and Western Washington University Ethics Policy. By becoming familiar with the Act and policies, supervisors will know how to carry out their duties while upholding Objectivity, Selflessness, Transparency, and Integrity.
