Wellness Program Instructors
Erica has studied yoga since her time as an undergraduate at Indiana University and member of the varsity swim team. She arrived in Pullman, Washington in 2002 to take over as the Head Coach of the Washington State University Cougars Swim Team. After a 15-year Division I coaching career, she moved to Bellingham, Washington with her partner to both step away from collegiate athletics, open new businesses, and do more yoga.
In 2005, Erica began studying Iyengar Yoga at the Moscow Yoga Center located 8 miles from the Washington border. She stepped up her own yoga practice and brought in teachers to teach yoga to her swimmers. In September of 2011 she began studying under Ingela Abbott at Yoga Northwest. Erica is in her second year of a two-year, in-depth apprenticeship program with Ingela, a Senior Iyengar Yoga Instructor, and has experience teaching classes to students, athletes, and coaches. She has also studied under senior Iyengar teachers Julie Gudmestad, Dean Lerner, Lynne Minton, and John Schumacher.
Classes are grounded in the Iyengar method and focus on alignment-based, core-strengthening exercises to nurture, stretch, and strengthen the whole being. We will incorporate props such as blocks and belts to allow students to work at their own level to safely practice each pose. Students will be observed and, if necessary, adjusted to focus on correct alignment.
Erica will clearly demonstrate and bring specific teaching points to each pose which awaken the body’s intelligence. She will devise different sequences of poses, which build skill and understanding, from posture to posture, and from class to class. Each class will end with Savasana, corpse pose, or deep relaxation. Students learn to rest in a profound way, completely releasing the body while drawing the mind towards the peace within.
