In addition to geospatial data files("GEO_data"), the SAL maintains two other servers: J:\SAL_info and J:\saldata (see notes below).
GEO_data
SAL's spatial data are stored on J:\GEO\GEO_data, organized by geographic regions:
BC (British Columbia)
BHAM (Bellingham)
ISLAND_County
KING_County
NW_Region
SAN_JUAN_County
SKAGIT_County
SNOHOMISH_County
USA
WA_Census
WA_NOAA
WA_State
WA_USGS
WHATCOM_County
WORLD
WWU
In addition there are two folders with collections of data from various geographic regions:
ESRI_data
GISdata
In each folder sub-folders contain different data sets organized by type of data and/or the data provider. Thus the BHAM folder contains:
1_COB_data (data from the City of Bellingham)
AirPhoto_Bham (air photos, organized by year)
Census_Bham (data from the US Census, for Bellingham)
Historical_Bham (historical data sets)
etc.
Note that as Bellingham is within Whatcom County, data covering the Bellingham area might also be found in the WHATCOM_County folder and/or the WA_State folder(s).
In general, the closer (geographically) to WWU, the better the data available. We have very good data for the City of Bellingham (zoning, streets, air photos, etc.) than for Seattle for example.
Digital data comes primarily from government agencies producing the data (e.g., the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington State DNR, USGS, etc.). Much of this has been simply downloaded from public websites and is stored on our servers purely as a convenience to our students. Individuals requiring the most up to date data are encouraged to contact the agencies directly to insure timely data.
SAL_info
WWU tutorial materials are stored on J:/SAL_info.
In addition to books and misc files specific to ESRI software, there are a
series of tutorial folders:
tut_FrontPage
tut_GIS
tut_GPS
tut_PowerPoint
tut_RS (Remote Sensing)
tut_Scanning
tut_SktechUp
Saldata
Class folders are stored on J:\saldata.
Class folders are organized by the course number (e.g., Egeo350 or Esci447) for
Huxley courses.
See also J:\SAL_info\ESRI_misc for ESRI books (pdf files) and tutorial materials.
