In 1980 the City of Bellingham contracted with the US Census Bureau for a special tabulation of Census data by City Neighborhoods. To do this the Census Bureau approximated City Neighborhoods as best they could using existing Census boundaries. As a result of this refitting of the City Neighborhoods to conform to Census boundaries the results are somewhat specific to this tabulation only. These 1980 Census neighborhood boundaries do not match the 1980 City Neighborhoods exactly, nor do they match the 2000 or current City Neighborhoods. Note that in 1980 the City of Bellingham had 22 neighborhoods total but now has 23 (the former Guide Meridian neighborhood having been expanded due to annexations and the divided into the Guide Meridian and the Meridian neighborhoods).
