Accessing 2000 Census data for your 1980 neighborhoods...

    It would be nice to have 2000 Census data for things like Income and Ethnicity for your neighborhood to go with the 1980 data we have... Unfortunately, we don't. Some of this data does exist, though not for the 'neighborhood' boundaries that we are using. Instead you have to use the existing Census Tracts and/or Block Groups. For some neighborhoods, the boundaries of these census areas are fairly close to the boundaries of your neighborhood. For others, the lines don't match at all.

    If you want to try to find 2000 Census data from the Census website, it will help if you know your Census Tract and/or Block Group numbers. These maps will help with that:

Once you have your Block Group or Tract number(s) you can (attempt to) navigate the Census data and/or website to find what you're after.

 

    Here are a couple of spreadsheets that have some of the Census data for the Block Groups and Tracts of Bellingham:

Note that these spreadsheets are from Census Summary File 1 (counts and information [age, sex, race, Hispanic/Latino origin, household relationship, whether residence is owned or rented] collected from all people and housing units). Summary File 1 is derived from the 100% count (full sample) and does not include any income data.

 

    For Income you will need to access data from Summary File 3 (detailed population and housing data [such as place of birth, education, employment status, income, value of housing unit, year structure built] collected from a 1-in-6 sample and weighted to represent the total population).
