Who May Enroll
Independent Learning courses are open to anyone with a desire to learn. Western students who are looking to bring their GPA up and gain re-instatement to the university will find Independent Learning classes helpful in reaching that goal.
Western’s academic year is divided into quarters (fall, winter, spring, summer) and all academic credits are stated and issued in quarter hours.
Term-based Online courses beginning and end dates correspond with the academic schedule on campus. Plan to login and participate at least once a week.
Self-paced Independent Learning courses are set-up to be completed within 10-12 weeks just like the academic quarter. Generally, the minimum time allowed to complete any Self-paced course is seven weeks from the time the first lesson is received by the instructor. The seven week minimum does not apply to courses with lessons numbering six or less.
Although Self-paced students have as long as six months to complete their course work, students who are graduating before the end of the six months must finish their course by the end of the quarter of graduation. As well, students who use a self-paced course to qualify for financial aid must complete the course within the quarter that aid was received.
It takes time to process lessons and exams, get them graded, mailed back and forth from student to instructor, especially during the summer months. It is the student’s responsibility to plan ahead and not wait until the last minute to submit work for grading.
Unless otherwise stated all courses are graded on the A-F system. Pass/Fail grading is available on an optional basis in elective courses only. Students who wish to change grade mode must do so before completing 40% of the work for Self-paced Independent Learning courses and Term-based Online classes before the 4th Friday of the quarter. The request must be made in writing at the Independent Learning office.
A grade is recorded on the transcript when all lessons have been submitted and tuition and fees have been paid.
At Western Washington University, all student must adhere to the Academic Dishonesty Policy and Procedure as published in the WWU General Catalog.
Western Washington University and Independent Learning reserve the right to change the fees, rules, calendar regulating registration, instruction and other university policies. Western may withdraw courses at any time.
Withdrawal and Refunds
Term-based Online courses follow the same withdrawal and refund deadline as main campus courses. Important dates and deadlines are listed on the Registrar’s Office website.
Students may withdraw from a Self-paced Independent Learning course and receive a refund of tuition any time within 30 days from your registration date. Requests must be made in writing. A charge for each assignment submitted will be withheld along with the registration fee. There is no refund of the registration fee. A Request to Withdraw Form is available in the course syllabus or on the Independent Learning website under Resources – Forms.
Tuition and fee waivers do not apply to self-supporting courses offered through Independent Learning.
Students who currently receive or anticipate receiving any financial aid from Western must complete and have grades submitted by the end of the registered quarter to assure continued eligibility (SAP) for financial aid.
